Milkshake Machine - A Look At The Emergence Of This Device

Remember the days of your youth, when you watched a milkshake machine whip up a flavored concoction of milk and ice cream? We would wait impatiently as the store owner held the stainless steel container under the spinning beaters. There was no need to hold the container - the cups clipped to the milkshake machine easily - it was just the owner wanting us to wait. After the mixing was complete, he or she would disconnect the steel cup from the machine, take our money and hand over the swirling mixture of ice-cream, milk and flavoring. The taste was always a treat. Today, in the 21st century, milkshakes are still a popular drink and one can still find stores, although few, filled with kids (and adults) sipping on various flavors. Milkshakes are consumed all over the planet and at many restaurants and fast food outlets, the milkshake machine is considered a standard albeit, important, piece of equipment – it is a mainstay in most food stores.

So what does one put in a milkshake, aside from the milk? I think it is safe to say, anything goes. Milkshakes can consist of an array of different ingredients. There are, of course, standard flavors like ice cream and chocolate, ice cream with strawberries and strawberry topping and so on. When visiting restaurants, you will see these standard flavors displayed on a giant menu boards or in the menu book. In some places one can find milkshakes with pieces of candy, cookie or even jelly-beans, mixed in the milk and ice cream. If you’re thinking of making your own, unique tasting milkshake, get yourself a good milkshake machine so that mixing up your new invention is done easily and with aplomb. It is also not uncommon to find alcoholic flavored milkshakes. These are milkshakes that have, together with the ice cream, milk and sweeter, some sort of alcoholic drink – Kahlua perhaps or how about a milkshake with crème de menthe mixed in?

The milkshake machine has changed in design and use, since I was a boy. Nowadays, huge corporations like McDonald’s have pre-made milkshakes that are constantly stirred in a refrigerated type of machine. At any time, a worker just pushes a paper cup under the tap, pushes a switch and ready-made milkshake oozes from the nozzle, filling the cup. The original ubiquitous whining shrill of a milkshake machine is now a seemingly anachronistic sound – rarely heard but always missed. Even the stainless steel containers which once filled the shelves of local mom and pop fast food stores have dwindled in numbers - replaced by paper. Perhaps there are times when some things in life just shouldn’t evolve and the slow disappearance of the milkshake machine is one of these times.
